Doka Estate Coffee Tour goes 30 kilometers northwest from San Jose, crossing the valley and going up the slopes of the Poás Volcano. The owning family has run the plantation for more than 70 years.
The location is ideal to grow coffee: average temperature of 17 to 28 degrees Celsius, rich soil and an altitude of 2664 to 5200 feet (800 to 1600 meters).
You will start the tour as you enter in the plantation and go into the area of the nursery, and your guide will show you a sample of the plants in every phase, from the seed to the producing bush.
From this area you will easily walk to the entrance of the oldest wet mill in Costa Rica where a tank to ferment the beans awaits you for your guide to start explaining what happens once the coffee is picked.
You will see the different machines used in the water process as well as the big tanks where they separate the beans from the export quality.
From this point you will see the ways they dry the coffee. As there are different methods. Probably the most interesting is at the end of the mill at the sun drying patios, where they have to be moving the beans every 45 minutes.
You will then walk to the roasting area where you may see several sorts of coffee as your guide explains the differences from one to the next.
At the end of the tour you will visit a souvenirs store where of course you can buy coffee to take to your beloved.
