The mighty Irazú Volcano is the tallest volcano in Costa Rica and it is located in the Cartago province, one of the first Spanish establishments in the country and former Capital City. The winding road crosses fertile lands where many different crops are grown. Visitors can expect spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding farms, countryside and pasture lands. At the very top of the volcano´s crater, on a clear day, one can witness the unforgettable bird’s eye view of both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
As this expedition descends, back to the city of Cartago, your guide will stop at Basilica de Los Angeles, home of the national Patron Saint and a famous peregrination site for many Catholic believers, some of them travel for several days or even weeks on foot, in the biggest faith pilgrimage manifestation of the country. The Temple features large vaulted ceilings and exquisite examples of stained-glass windows.
The next step is the Lankester Gardens, a University of Costa Rica for investigation and research project that protects more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads and hundreds of species of many other plants. Afterwards, we will continue on the way to the Orosi Valley, a scenic region of unparalleled beauty with remaining colonial churches where visitors will have time to enjoy a tasty typical lunch at a local restaurant.
