Caño Island Biological Reserve has pristine blue waters and a colorful coral reef. It is 20 kilometers from Drake Bay and is also a remarkable archeological region.
Habitat to a great variety of marine flora and fauna the reserve has the highest concentration of coral organisms along the Pacific coast.
The tour leaves from Uvita beach traveling by boat for 1.5 hours. Depending on the time of year in Bahia Ballena, you will have the possibility, during the trip, to spot dolphins, whales and sea turtles.
Once on the island, there are two snorkeling sessions in two different spots chosen by the captain and guides according to the conditions of the day.
Caño Island Biological Reserve’s water is breathtakingly clear, and you can easily observe sea turtles, dolphins, barracudas, rays, moray eels, and groupers swimming along with a variety of small sharks.
As it is a protected reserve, the amount of divers is regulated, and visitors are not allowed to remove anything from the marine life either alive or dead.
The average time for snorkeling is approximately 2.5 hours or more, depending on the visibility and capacity of the participants.
Caño Island Biological Reserve is a model of the Costa Rican National Park System´s marine sanctuary. Efforts go above and beyond to protect wildlife by preventing fishing, pollution, or any sort of resource exploitation.
The access to the island waters around the Park are carefully controlled to maintain the fragile ecosystem unharmed, and so the human impact can be kept within limits that prevent damage to this beautiful reserve.
*Not recommended for children under the age of 6, pregnant women, or people with serious health problems such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or urinary incontinence due to the lack of bathing on the boat.
