Aquiares began with the coffee plantation at the end of the 19th century and has grown to be one of the largest and most important coffee farms in the country.
The village of Aquiares, formerly part of the hacienda, is now an independent rural community, although most of its inhabitants work in coffee.
On the other hand, the Hacienda has been characterized by seeking sustainable processes that allow them to create a positive carbon footprint in a healthy and happy environment.
The tour
The Complete Aquiareño Style Day begins when you arrive at Hacienda Aquiares and are welcomed with an excellent coffee and pastries. You will be introduced to your tour guide, who will give you a brief introduction to the farm and its history.
Then you will walk to the Mirador del Ceibo (The Kapok tree lookout point), from where you will contemplate the farm and the beautiful blue mountains that surround it.
Afterward, you will walk with your guide through the community, interacting with the neighbors and learning more about their culture. To end this part of the day, you will visit the iconic church of Aquiares, the center of the social and religious life in the region.
At the end of the visit to the community of Aquiares, you will plant a coffee tree and, depending on the time of the year, live the experience of “cogida del café” (Coffee picking).
Then, with your guide, you will take a trail in the nearby forest to see the beautiful Aquiares waterfall, and the beautiful lagoon at its bottom, where, if you want, you can swim.
Later you in the Complete Aquiareño Style Day you will pass to La Esperanza, the “big house” of the hacienda, where you will enjoy a delicious gourmet lunch.
At the end of lunch, you will have some time to rest and then head out to the mill where you will enjoy a complete coffee tour that will take you through all the stages of the coffee bean, from peeling and husking to the dryers.
You will end the tour in the aromatic roaster, where you will learn about the different degrees of roasting and how to taste coffee.
Finally, Esperanza returns home to finish the experience with a delicious cup of coffee.
