The immediate forest of Selva Verde Lodge gives a great start to the intensely assorted avifauna of the Costa Rican lowlands.
You will be overwhelmed with the fantastic amount of visible birds. This is plausibly one of the most prolific regions for birding in Costa Rica.
You may see Gray-headed Chachalaca’s, Collared Aracari’s, Olive-backed Euphonia’s, Montezuma Oropendola’s, Passerini’s, Blue gray, Passerini’s and Palm Tanagers, and Black-cheeked Woodpeckers are the most frequent.
You may also watch the Chesnut mandibled, the Keel-billed Toucan, and the Red-throated Ant-tanager. Similarly, accessible is the birding around the Sarapiqui River. With various species of kingfishers: Green, Amazon, and Ringed Kingfisher should be around. You may also spot Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Little and Great Blue Herons, and Neotropic Cormorants.
However, Selva Verde is noticeable in the birding world as it is a reliable place to watch both the Fasciated Tiger-heron and the breathtaking Sunbittern regularly seen scavenging around the stones in the river.
The tracks will take you to the fantastic gallery rainforest habitat where you may also watch some of the rare Broad-billed and Rufous Motmot, Slaty-tailed Trogon, Pale-billed Woodpecker, and Semiplumbeous Hawk.
You will delight in the mixed bands of tanagers, woodcreepers, antbirds, wrens, and hummingbirds.
You may also enjoy the White-collared Manakins dancing on the forest floor.
Other possible birds to watch should be around are White-crowned, Mealy and Red-lored Parrots, Brown-hooded, Masked and Black-crowned Tityra’s, Euphonias, golden-hooded Tanagers, Yellow-crowned Euphonia’s, Crested Guans, and so much more.
You can also watch the breathtaking green macaws, the bronze tailed plumeteer, the Scaly-breasted hummingbird, and sometimes the fascinating heliconia’ black-crested Coquette.
